Hi marilyn, I belong to Capital Quilters, a group of about 120 fantastic women ( no blokes at the moment).
yesterday we had our monthly meeting and there were 50 or 60 quilts for Show 'n Tell
I always take a camera cos there r always quilts that inspire me.
We make lots of Charity quilts as well. Members also bring orphan blocks and other leftovers and someone else takes them home to turn them into more charity quilts. The quilts go to the Neonatal Unit, Victim Support,Childrens ward at the hospital, Women's Refuge and to our local Hospices and Old Folks Homes.
    Cheers,
    Elly

Hi PJ I've been quilting for about 12 years. and loving it more and more.

When we came out from Holland in 1984, I bought a second hand Singer. I used this until last June, when I bought a brand new Bernina Aurora 440 Quilters Edition--- FANTASTIC!!
I can tell you I am one happy little patchworker, and am coming to grips with machine quilting as well.
    cheers, elly

thanks Marilyn, I live in the North Island, Just outside Wellington.
I've been quilting for 12 years or so, and enjoy it more and more. I've tried all kinds of techniques, and enjoy piecing, handquilting and applique. My problem is taking the TIME to do it all PROPERLY. There's this urge to have it FINISHED. Our goal and achievement oriented conditioning is to blame, no doubt. I'm slowly starting to enjoy the PROCESS rather than fixating on the end result.

    Floral,

I know what you mean! I got a load of Noah's ark prints, but only 1/2 yards because I had nothing in particular in mind! I can't find them anymore. I have some Laurel Burch Mythical Horses material...everyone know that or is a pic needed?...it's the beautiful blue one...but...more HORSES! I dearly love horses (and cats) and used to ride daily when I lived in the desert. Gorgeous sunsets, along the Rio Grande...rattlers, yes, but unless they were molting, they wouldn't bother you if you didn't bother them! Ran into a molter on horseback; horse reared and I let her, we took off fast in another direction! They'll snap at anything when they molt because they can't see. Very pretty tarantulas, some people made pets of them. I heard that if they bit, it didn't hurt very much. Not for me!

One of the oddest and in some ways most enjoyable places I've ever lived...Las Cruces, NM.

I cannot wait for this swap to begin, I have been researching patterns to use all the different fabric in. Not quiet sure with this one, but still a bit of time to think about it. I have ideas for a Christmas quilt. Will be good to see what we all come up with. Joyce

Wow, Anna! That was close! This is the same fabric I had chosen but chose to order something on the net instead. Whew! Mine has eagles on it and is from Alaska. Thought I would put in a little out of state flavor in it.

Well gals, I stayed up late last night and washed, ironed and cut my noodles. I have 28 lovely little noodles all 22 inches by 4 1/2 inches. I have lots more fabric if I should need to cut more if more people join in. Now I just need to get to the post office tomorrow to pick up a couple of larger post envelopes and Im all set.
Has anyone else gotten brave and cut yet? It is July in 2 days, 4 hours and 53 minutes, just in case your wondering.

When I have ordered fabric from the States, I have had to pay duty on it if the value is over $20.00 CA. I think that the sample idea may work as long as the value is twenty bucks or under. This is for fabric coming into Canada. I can't wait for July!!

Hi Serra, looking at your material I thought you could cut a strip across the width of 4.5 inchs. You only need more yardage if you have to cut length ways.
We are like children at Christmas time, excitement growing every day, so many unusual fabric being shown, I have a wish list for one of each.
Hope I have not confused you.

I think, if I understand the requirements that 1 3/4 yd. would be needed to provide the 28 people that are signed up with a 4 1/2 x 22 piece of fabric. You might want more in cass you made a cutting mistake. More if more people have signed up.

I was thinking that, if I signed up for a shuffle, I might get extra fabric to back the quilt or add to the quilt any way.

  • Re:sending across borders/ duty - 2007-06-27 11:36:40-04
From Australia, I don't believe we have duty for gifts or samples. To post my block to Ruth (inside Australia)I just put in an ordinary mail envelope and put two normal postage stamps on it to make sure I covered the costs. PO man said it was too much. From State to State in Australia there is no duty. Not sure how it will go sending parcel to PJ but can not see a problem. I have sent many parcel to US and will just declare Fabric Pieces/Gifts. Across borders, Country to Country, hope do we do not have a problem.
I sent block to Ruth, on the Customs Docket, I put sample, Unsolicited Gift, with small value given.
I will do the same with Noodle, if Customs OFFICIALS, open packet they will see there is only a small sample of fabric.
I sent parcels to South Africa for many years, using the same wording. Sample may be the key word, plus Free Gift.
Of course I only speak sending from U. K
    LOL JO

Our first exchange will show up any problems,

Re:sending across borders/ duty

  • Re:sending across borders/ duty - 2007-06-27 04:38:23-04
Good question Kathy! I would think that for customs they would only be the value of what went into them as they are an unfinished product. For insurance, Priceless comes to mind

Has anyone had any experience sending blocks in the mail for block exchanges before?

We are having a quilting Strawberry Social next weekend and I will ask the guild members if they have done anything like this too.

    Anna

Re:sending across borders/ duty

  • sending across borders/ duty - 2007-06-27 04:02:10-04
I was chatting with my across the border friend lastnight and she had a wonderful idea for the noodles exchange across the borders. Since there is no money exchanged and no profit to anyone there is no reason we cant put gift on the customs forms. We will still have to declare the value. 4yards X $6= $24. for instance. But calling them a gift should take care of the issue of anyone having to pay duty on anything. The reason this subject came up for me was when the ebay fabric arrived it cost me over $7. in duty or customs taxes. Ouch!!!!!
It's almost July, It's almost July. Can everyone say hurray!!!!

Re:Measurements

  • Re:Measurements - 2007-06-25 04:39:26-04
I have learned the same measurements only we were told the yard was with the head turned. My mom is six foot so she is a little longer in the arms than I am, however when we use these measurments we come up with about the the same lengths. Works for me!!!

Re:Measurements

  • Re:Measurements - 2007-06-25 13:38:43-04
HI Joy...I still use the nose to fingers measure when approximating yardage!
I worked in a fabric store during my high school and college years. I learned there that when purchasing fabric you can get a good estimate of the number of yards on the bolt by counting the folds along the top of the bolt.
Two folds is approximately one yard.
this is helpful when you are unsure if there will be enough fabric for a project and you don't want to have the clerk measure needlessly.

Re:Measurements

  • Re:Measurements - 2007-06-24 22:48:32-04
When I was at school-in what my kids think was the dark ages, we learnt these approx measurements:
finger to nose=yard(updated when metric came into ditto with head turned away= metre)
foot length=1 foot, also elbow to wrist = 1 foot
    hand span=8-9 inches
    width of hand =4 inches
length of the last section of thumb(the bit with the nail in)=1 inch.
I think they're for fairly average people, and I still use them for approximate measuring when I don't have a tape with me , they're fairly accurate and easy to remember. Anyone got any others?

    Joy
