When I was at school-in what my kids think was the dark ages, we learnt these approx measurements:
finger to nose=yard(updated when metric came into ditto with head turned away= metre)
foot length=1 foot, also elbow to wrist = 1 foot
hand span=8-9 inches
width of hand =4 inches
length of the last section of thumb(the bit with the nail in)=1 inch.
I think they're for fairly average people,and I still use them for approximate measuring when I don't have a tape with me , they're fairly accurate and easy to remember. Anyone got any others?
